Science Museum

Lower Indra Canal, OdishaOngoingInstitutional museum campus and outdoor exhibit grounds

A science museum proposal for Lower Indra Canal, Odisha — imagined as a civic learning campus where brick architecture, illuminated exhibit courts and large-format outdoor installations turn science education into a public experience.

The Brief

The project called for a science museum that could function as both an institutional destination and an inviting public campus. The ambition was to create a place where students, families and visitors could encounter science not only inside galleries, but also across the open landscape through outdoor exhibits, interpretive walks and memorable arrival moments.

Design Response

FMDL organised the museum as a low-rise brick campus with clear, legible forms and a strong public forecourt. The main museum block is shaped with deep frames, vertical light slots and a prominent entrance canopy that gives the institution a recognizable civic identity. Around it, pathways, lawns and lighting extend the experience into the landscape. The night views reinforce the proposal's public character: the museum glows as a landmark, while the broader campus accommodates science-themed installations including a rocket plaza, satellite dish structures and sculptural learning objects that turn the site itself into an open-air exhibit.

Materials & Approach

The architecture relies on exposed red brick masonry, smooth concrete framing bands, recessed glazed openings, broad stone-paved walkways, integrated landscape edges and warm architectural lighting. Together these elements give the museum a grounded, durable institutional language while keeping the campus visually approachable and memorable after dusk.

Outcome

The proposal establishes the Science Museum as a regional educational landmark for Lower Indra Canal, Odisha — combining a calm institutional building with immersive outdoor science displays so the project reads as both a museum and a public learning landscape.
